United Nations Day in Schools
United Nations (UN) Day fell on the 25th of October. To celebrate, students from Years 7-10 completed an activity in their science classes during Term 4 where they investigated the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and learnt about actions they can take in their own lives to help our global society reach these goals.
Although the students of Port expressed a strong interest in all 17 of the goals, Goal 6 – Access to clean water and sanitation topped the vote for which goal was the most important to them, closely followed by Goal 11 – Sustainable cities and communities: A future in which cities provide opportunities for all, with access to basic services, energy, housing, transportation and more.
Some actions that students already take or feel that they could take to help reach these goals included not littering and recycling wherever possible (Goals 11, 12, 14 and 15), not wasting water (Goals 6, 11 and 12), donating money, food and/or other goods to charities (Goals 1- 4 and 10), riding a bike instead of taking a car (Goals 11 and 13) and standing up for those experiencing discrimination (Goals 5, 10 and 16).
United Nations Day in Schools is an event facilitated by the United Nations Association of Australia NSW Division, with the aim to inspire young people to be kind, perseverant, and motivated global citizens.
