Wellbeing
At our school, student wellbeing and learning go hand in hand. We want every student to feel safe, included and ready to learn. Whether your child needs help with their mental, emotional, social or physical wellbeing, we are here to help them thrive at school and in daily life.
The welfare of our students is important, and in order to provide the care support program which is a notable feature of our school, a network of wellbeing staff has been established.
Among teachers with particular functions are the Head Teacher Wellbeing (Mr H Papangelis), School Counsellor (Mrs A Chappelow) and Careers Adviser (Ms J Savage). If a student needs special care or attention from the school, the Head Teacher Wellbeing can be contacted, either by school email, telephone or letter. A student who needs counselling assistance is advised to make an appointment to see the School Counsellor. If a student needs vocational guidance, an appointment should be made with the Careers Adviser.
Year Advisers provide an immediate contact for assistance with school and personal problems. They give pastoral care, co-ordinate the Year’s activities and advise on matters involving school progress.

Merit Award System
Port Hacking High School recognises our student’s success through the demonstration of our Core values of tenacity, respect, excellence and empathy. All students begin their learning journey at a Learner Level.
By demonstrating their development and growth through the key areas of positive behaviour, individual learning success and contribution to school leadership and community they then progress to the higher levels of Connecting, Succeeding and Thriving.
A student’s level status will be reviewed at the end of each term. The link below contains a flowchart of how the system works
How we support student wellbeing
Supporting each student’s mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing is part of everyday school life.
We do this through:
- teachers who help students feel welcome and included
- access to school counsellors, school psychologists and specialist staff
- programs that support health, social skills, attendance and positive behaviour
- help for students who are new or changing year levels
- clear expectations for behaviour and respectful relationships
- staff who get to know each child and work closely with families
- developing health care plans for students
- open communication about wellbeing and support.
